Munmun by Jesse Andrews

This book is kind of a departure from the types of books I normally read. I don’t even remember how I came across it, but I’m very glad I did. Jesse Andrews is apparently a New York Time’s bestselling author for his other books, which I keep meaning to read but haven’t actually gotten around to yet. Regardless, Andrews is a talented and hilarious author with an uncanny ability to turn disturbing situations into comedy gold.

Munmun is the story of Warner, a young man living in a twisted world where a person’s physical size is dependent on how wealthy they are. Warner comes from a poor family who are about the size of rats due to their lack of wealth. Conversely, the extremely rich can reach the size of skyscrapers. The book follows Warner as he navigates the world, finding work, making friends and trying to grow bigger in a world designed to keep the rich big and the poor little.

While I don’t normally read comedic books, I can honestly say this was the funnest book I’ve read in awhile. I’ve never experienced a novel that made me laugh out loud so many times. In today’s dark times, a good laugh can be priceless, so a book like this is invaluable. I’d recommend this to fans of dystopian fiction, comedy or anyone who could use a good laugh.
